EAS Buying Guide: RF vs AM, Tags & Installation
Choosing the right Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) system depends on your store, merchandise, entrance width and the type of security tags you plan to use. This guide provides a practical starting point. For larger, unusual or multi-location projects, the INEO team can confirm the final configuration with you.
Should I choose RF or AM?
RF 8.2 MHz
RF is generally a strong choice for apparel and fashion stores, especially single-store operators looking for a straightforward solution. It is also commonly suited to pharmacies and other retailers that use flat adhesive security labels on packaged merchandise.
If you want a clear, transparent INEO Clarity system, choose RF. INEO Clarity systems are RF 8.2 MHz only.
AM 58 kHz
AM is generally a better starting point for hardware stores, sporting goods stores, department stores and retailers selling a significant amount of tools or merchandise containing metal.
Custom-branded floor gates
INEO Custom Floor Gates can be manufactured in either RF 8.2 MHz or AM 58 kHz. Each system operates on one frequency only; a single floor gate system does not operate RF and AM at the same time.
How many antennas do I need?
For a standard single-door entrance or exit, one antenna can be suitable.
For entrances or exits wider than approximately 4 feet, INEO generally recommends two antennas, normally positioned on opposite sides of the opening.
For entrances beyond approximately 8 feet, a larger or multi-system configuration may be required. Contact the INEO team to confirm the appropriate layout based on entrance width, tag type and site conditions.
Entrance shape, antenna position, tag type and the physical environment can affect detection performance, so wider or unusual entrances should be reviewed with the INEO team before finalizing the order.
Which security tags work with which system?
RF 8.2 MHz tags work with RF 8.2 MHz systems only.
AM 58 kHz tags work with AM 58 kHz systems only.
Some specialty products, including certain spider tags or screamers, contain both RF and AM technology and can work with either compatible system. Do not assume every spider tag or screamer is dual-frequency; check the product specification.
Can I install an INEO system myself?
Yes. Many INEO systems can be self-installed, and INEO can provide video guidance and remote technical support during installation. The systems use low-voltage installation requirements.

Can I order online?
For straightforward orders and smaller quantities, the easiest option is to purchase the appropriate system, tags or accessories directly through the INEO Products store.
For bulk quantities, institutional purchases, multiple locations, custom configurations or larger system orders, contact the INEO team. Volume and institutional pricing may be available.
