How Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) Works

What is Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)?

Electronic Article Surveillance is a technology used by retailers to help deter and detect the unauthorized removal of merchandise. A typical EAS setup has three parts: a detection system at the entrance or exit, security tags or labels attached to merchandise, and checkout equipment used to remove tags or deactivate labels.

EAS does not determine whether an item was paid for. Instead, the system detects an active security tag or label that is compatible with the installed EAS technology. That is why frequency compatibility and proper checkout procedures are important.

How does an EAS system work?

  1. Merchandise is protected. A reusable hard tag or adhesive security label is attached to the item or packaging.
  2. The entrance system creates a detection area. EAS antennas monitor the protected zone at the store entrance or exit for compatible active tags and labels.
  3. Purchased merchandise is cleared at checkout. Staff remove a hard tag with the appropriate detacher or deactivate an adhesive label with a compatible deactivator.
  4. An active tag or label can trigger an alarm. If protected merchandise passes through the detection area while its EAS device is still active, the system can alert store staff.

What happens to EAS tags and labels at checkout?

Hard security tags

Hard tags are physical devices attached to merchandise, often with a pin or another locking mechanism. They are generally reusable. At checkout, an authorized detacher releases the tag so it can be used again.

Security labels

EAS labels are adhesive security devices commonly applied to product packaging or directly to suitable merchandise. Instead of being physically removed in many applications, the label is typically deactivated at checkout so the customer can leave without triggering the EAS system.

RF 8.2 MHz vs. AM 58 kHz EAS systems

Two of the most common EAS technologies used in retail are Radio Frequency (RF) at 8.2 MHz and Acousto-Magnetic (AM) at 58 kHz. Both can be used with hard tags and labels designed for the same technology, but RF and AM components are not interchangeable.

RF 8.2 MHz

RF systems operate at 8.2 MHz and require RF-compatible antennas, hard tags, labels and checkout equipment. If your store already has an RF system, replacement tags and labels should be selected specifically for RF 8.2 MHz compatibility.

Does EAS reduce retail theft and shrinkage?

There is no responsible single percentage that can be applied to every store. Independent research has documented meaningful reductions in theft, shortage or shrinkage in a number of security-tagging deployments, while other evaluations have produced mixed results. Performance depends on factors such as the merchandise being protected, the visibility and type of tag, store conditions, tagging strategy, staff response, compatibility and implementation.

A peer-reviewed systematic review published in Crime Science identified 50 eligible studies of retail security tagging. Eight contained quantitative effectiveness data, and five of those eight reported positive results associated with the introduction of tags. The researchers concluded that the available evidence was suggestive rather than sufficient for one universal effectiveness estimate, and noted that more visible tags appeared to be associated with greater reductions in theft than less visible tags.

An EAS case study archived by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs reported that inventory shortage in EAS-user departments decreased by approximately 17% over a five-year study period, while shortage in the same departments at non-EAS locations increased by 30% over the same period. This is a historical case study, not a guarantee of results for every retailer.

For broader, more current retail-loss-prevention context, the National Retail Federation's 2026 research reported that respondents experienced an average 12.4% decrease in shoplifting incidents and an 8.1% decrease in merchandise-theft incidents between 2024 and 2025. NRF attributed the improvement in part to retailers' efforts to protect goods, employees and consumers. These NRF figures reflect broader loss-prevention efforts and should not be interpreted as an EAS-only result.

Bottom line: EAS should be viewed as part of a layered loss-prevention program rather than a promise of a fixed shrink-reduction percentage.

What determines how well an EAS system performs?

  • Correct technology: antennas, tags, labels, detachers and deactivators need to be compatible with the same RF or AM technology.
  • Entrance width and layout: the system must be configured for the opening and detection coverage required.
  • Merchandise and tagging strategy: tag or label selection should match the product, packaging and theft risk.
  • Tag placement: products need to be protected consistently and in a way that supports reliable detection and normal merchandising.
  • Checkout procedures: purchased items must be properly detached or deactivated.
  • Staff response: stores need practical procedures for responding to alarms and identifying avoidable false-alarm causes.
